22-year-old pianist composes music for ‘Billy

[ad_1]

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — He was a legendary jazz composer, a gay icon and an inspiration to many people in the Black community. Now there is a new show at Pittsburgh Public Theater telling the story and honoring the accomplishments of Billy Strayhorn.

While on the stage, this musical follows the successes of one composer. But down in the orchestra pit, another young musician is measuring his own success.

Matthew Whitaker is the composer and musical director of “Billy Strayhorn: Something to Live For,” one of the latest productions at Pittsburgh Public Theater.

“All of them are just so beautiful and well written. From the music to the lyrics, it’s all there,” said 22-year-old Whitaker.

Whitaker has the task of arranging and orchestrating all of the music for the show featuring a nine-piece band.

Original songs and some new ones tell the origin story of one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. Not only is Whitaker doing all of this at just 22 years old, he also happens to be doing it blind.

“It’s an honor to be compared to Stevie, but there is only one Stevie Wonder,” he said.

Whitaker tells KDKA-TV music has been a blessing throughout his life. His father Moses Whitaker attributes his musical gift to another gift he received at a young age.

“Matt was 3 years old. He came home from school and he was playing the keyboard his grandfather had given him and he was playing ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ with both hands,” his dad said.

From nursery rhymes to throwback TV jingles and now performing in front of large audiences, Whitaker has always been encouraged by his family to play from the heart, not the head — a message that continues to be his major key to unlocking new opportunities.

“Especially in jazz because in jazz music, you really have the room to do you and be free and express yourself musically,” he said.

While talking about the concept of the show, Nambiar informed the media during the press conference in Mumbai, “I’m pleased that Bhushanji chose Kaala to make his OTT debut. I was eager to investigate the idea of “reverse hawala,” which one of my writers had discovered. As we dug more into it, we learned fresher ideas, and eventually, we were eager to share it with everyone. Since the release of my first movie, ‘Shaitan’, Bhushanji has provided me with unwavering support as a creator. I can’t wait to witness the magic again now that ‘Kaala’ is here.”

How to Watch and Stream 1883, the ‘Yellowstone’

[ad_1]

It may be a while before we see the Yellowstone finale, but we just got major news about another show in the Yellowstone universe: 1883.

Fans of the Tim McGraw-led series now have the opportunity to purchase all 10 episodes of the limited series on Amazon Prime Video. According to the streaming site, viewers could choose to buy each episode of 1883 at $2.99, or pay for the entire season at once for a total of $24.99.

‘1883’

'1883'

That probably has a lot of people wondering how else they can take in the spin-off. Luckily, we’ve got all the answers for you.

How to watch 1883

Besides buying each episode on Amazon, the best way to watch the show is to stream it on Paramount+. You can watch the first one completely free, but after that, you’ll need a subscription, which runs $5.99 a month. You do get a free-trial for a week, so you can always cancel if you don’t think it’s worth it! Although, if you’re a fan of the Yellowstone world, you’ll likely want to keep it as the other series, including 1923, Lawmen: Bass Reeves,Mayor of Kingstown and the soon-to-be-released 6666, are or will be on there.
The original Yellowstone is only available on Peacock now.

Because of how quickly things can change in the streaming world, however, it might be worth it to buy the episodes outright so you always have them.

Will there be a season 2 of 1883?

As for whether 1883 will ever come back for season 2, it doesn’t seem likely at the moment. Taylor spoke out on this subject in February 2022, telling Deadline that the series was “a peek through time to show you this one specific journey.” But that doesn’t mean this era of Yellowstone will not continue to be shown, because Lawmen: Bass Reeves, starring David Oyelowo, is set to take place within a similar timeframe.

Fans can get a sneak peek at what’s to come thanks to a teaser trailer that dropped on Instagram.

“The legend you know. The truth you don’t,” reads the official caption. “David Oyelowo is Bass Reeves. Lawmen: Bass Reeves premieres this fall, exclusively on #ParamountPlus.”

Country star Granger Smith leaves music for

[ad_1]

(WTVO) — Country music star Granger Smith has told fans he is stepping away from the music industry to pursue Christian ministry.

The 43-year-old singer posted the message during the final stop of his tour on Saturday, Fox News reported.

“I took this pic on Saturday- a keepsake from my last show as a touring musician,” Smith wrote on Instagram. “It’s been such a privilege to claim that job title for so many years!”

“Let’s be clear,” he continued. “This is not retirement. That would mean I’m quitting work altogether. It’s also not because I’m burned out or unwell or sick or heartbroken or grieving. I am more at peace and more free than any other time of my life. It’s not for any of those reasons.”

“Let me tell you the real reason: Knowing Jesus and telling others about Him is the treasure of my life. And I want you to know this, so you can have Him as your treasure too. I want my family to experience it and my kids to know this joy. I don’t want a career based upon building a name for myself to get in the way of that, no matter what kind of popularity or career I’ve gained,” he added.

Smith had previously announced he was attending seminary to pursue his Master of Arts degree, and said it was a contradiction to go to “seminary and pursue ministry” and then perform on the weekends and “try to be exalting myself.”

The singer’s 3-year-old son River died in 2019, and credited his faith with saving him when his life hit rock bottom. His son, Maverick, was born in 2021. He has two other children, London and Lincoln, with his wife, Amber.

Vivek Ramaswamy can no longer use Eminem’s music

[ad_1]

Presidential hopeful Ramaswamy gave an impromptu performance of Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ onstage during a campaign event in Iowa earlier this month

Article content

Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy gave an impromptu performance of Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” onstage during a campaign event in Iowa earlier this month.

But the Grammy-winning hip-hop artist wants that to be the political newcomer’s only performance — at least when it comes to Eminem’s music. Nearly two weeks after Ramaswamy showed off his rapping skills at the Iowa State Fair, Eminem asked Ramaswamy’s campaign to not do that again.

Music licensor BMI said the renowned rapper objected to Ramaswamy’s use of his compositions — the “Eminem Works” — and asked that Ramaswamy’s campaign stop using his music.

According to an Aug. 23 letter to Ramaswamy reported by the Daily Mail, BMI will “consider any performance of the Eminem Works by the Vivek 2024 campaign from this date forward to be a material breach of the Agreement for which BMI reserves all rights and remedies with respect thereto.”

Tricia McLaughlin, a senior adviser to Ramaswamy’s campaign, said in an email response to questions about Eminem’s objection that Ramaswamy “just got on the stage and cut loose.”

“To the American people’s chagrin, we will have to leave the rapping to the Real Slim Shady,” she said.

This is not the first time the rapper, who’s also known as Slim Shady and was born Marshall B. Mathers III, has snubbed a Republican politician.

On the day of the third and final presidential debate of the 2016 election, Eminem released a surprise song titled “Campaign Speech” warning Americans against then-candidate Donald Trump. Nearly a year later, at the BET Hip Hop Awards, the rapper said Trump’s policies were harmful to America and criticized fans of his who voted for Trump in 2016.

Right before the 2004 election, Eminem released a political protest song called “Mosh” that criticized President George W. Bush.

While Eminem has often let his music do the talking, politically, he allowed Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign use “Lose Yourself” — the same song Ramaswamy performed in Iowa — in an advertisement that aired the day before the election. The rapper shared the ad on Twitter with the caption: “One opportunity … #Vote.”

The Detroit rapper has also used his platform to support gun-control initiatives and advocate for abortion rights, tweeting in 2022 about his disagreement with the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The rapper, who was born to a teen mother in a White, working-class family in a small town in Missouri, has often referenced in his music the racism, police violence and poverty Black Americans face, and his lyrics also talk of challenges low-income Americans face throughout the nation.

Ramaswamy, who is a long shot to win the Republican nomination and a political newcomer, has depicted himself as a Republican very much in line with Trump’s movement and has made multiple appeals to the former president’s supporters by using some of Trump’s rhetoric on race. During last week’s Republican presidential primary debate, Ramaswamy said “reverse racism is racism,” a statement that could resonate with Republican voters.

Moments ahead of his performance in Iowa, Ramaswamy — who used to rap as a student at Harvard University under the stage name “Da Vek” — was asked by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) what his favourite walkout song is. He responded with “Lose Yourself.” The song, which was from the 2002 film “8 Mile” and won the Oscar for best original song, contains autobiographical elements from the rapper’s life and his overcoming of obstacles in his path to fame. Ramaswamy gleefully performed part of the song to a cheering crowd at the Iowa State Fair, and the moment went viral online.

While campaign theme songs date from the days of George Washington, clashes between candidates and musicians only became a fixture of campaign seasons starting in 1984, when President Ronald Reagan, while campaigning in New Jersey, mentioned native son Bruce Springsteen and his “message of hope.” Springsteen, whose “Born in the U.S.A.” was a hit at the time, complained that Reagan was co-opting his image.

Such tiffs have become a common part of the American political landscape in the nearly 40 years since.

Four songs got Bush into hot water during his two successful presidential campaigns, in 2000 and 2004: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “I Won’t Back Down,” John Mellencamp’s “R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.,” Sting’s “Brand New Day” and Orleans’s “Still the One.”

In 2008, Republican presidential nominee John McCain took flak from the band Heart because his campaign played “Barracuda” as his running mate, Sarah Palin, walked onstage at the Republican National Convention.

Soul and R&B legend Sam Moore sent a letter to then-Sen. Barack Obama requesting his 2008 presidential campaign stop using “Hold On, I’m Comin’,” the song he performed as a member of the group Sam and Dave. Moore told North Carolina’s WFMY at the time that he thought it was “rather rude” that no one had reached out to get his permission to use the song, because its use suggested he supported the candidate. Obama’s campaign, which had been using the tune for months to pump up crowds at rallies, agreed to stop using it.

In 2012, Petty’s representatives told Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) to stop using a snippet of his song “American Girl,” which she used while announcing her run for president. That same year, the band Survivor sued another GOP candidate, Newt Gingrich, for using its signature song, “Eye of the Tiger.”

In 2018, supporters of Trump danced to Pharrell Williams’s song “Happy” as they waited for the then-president to take the stage at a convention in Indiana. The song played hours after a gunman killed 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history.

Through his attorney, Williams threatened legal action, issuing a cease-and-desist letter to Trump, alleging that playing “Happy” amounted to copyright infringement and trademark violation.

Florence Welch Reveals Emergency Surgery Saved Her

[ad_1]

Florence Welch has underwent a serious surgery that led to the cancellation of two performances.

The leading vocalist of Grammy-winning group Florence and the Machine announced on Instagram Sunday the reason why she had to cancel two festival performances this past week — because of an emergency surgery that she said “saved my life.”

“I’m so sorry that I had to cancel the last couple of shows. My feet are fine, I had to have emergency surgery for reasons I don’t really feel strong enough to go into yet, but it saved my life,” the singer, 37, wrote, months after revealing a foot injury in November. “And I will be back to close out the Dance Fever tour in Lisbon and Malaga. (Maybe not jumping so much but you can do that for me).”

“Suffice to say I wish the songs were less accurate in their predictions. But creativity is a way of coping, mythology is way of making sense,” she added. “And the dark fairytale of Dance Fever, with all its strange prophecies, will provide me with much needed strength and catharsis right now.”

Just last week, Welch’s band announced the cancellation of two festival dates that were in support of the group’s 2022 LP Dance Fever. The gigs at Zurich Open Air Festival and Rock En Seine were both set for late August, and the Instagram Story announcement noted that the postponement was a result of “medical advice.”

Welch previously suffered a foot injury last November and had to cancel shows then as well, letting fans know on Instagram that “after an X ray it seems I was dancing on a broken foot last night.”

“It is not in my nature to postpone a show, and certainly not a UK tour, but I’m in pain and as dancers know, dancing on an injury is not a good idea. And have been told not to perform to avoid further damage,” the singer revealed.

“I’m heartbroken as the Dance Fever tour has been my favorite show we have ever put on. The communion with you. Your beautiful faces shining,” she continued. “I love you so much, and I’m so sorry to anyone who is disappointed. My heart is aching. I can’t wait to be back on my feet and back in your arms.”

Welch has long been open about her health, too. In July 2022, she caught up with Munroe Bergdorf on the Spotify podcast The Way We Are about how her choice to stop drinking when she realized alcohol was a problem for her around the band’s 2011 LP, Ceremonials.

“In terms of navigating being in the public eye, I think sobriety is the best thing I ever did,” she said.

“It took me a long time to come to terms with the fact that I had a problem with drinking because I was one of those drinkers where [it was all or nothing],” Welch explained at the time. “If I enjoy my drinking, I can’t control it and if I control my drinking, I don’t enjoy it. That was a real wake-up call for me.”
