Five positive French news stories to start weekend

[ad_1]

Concerts translated into sign language for deaf people

A collective in France, 10 Doigts en cavale, translates concerts and festival shows for deaf people, so they can experience the music too.

The co-founders ‘chansigne (sing-sign)’ the words of the songs and communicate their tempo so that deaf people can best understand the music

Aurélie Nahon, co-founder, told The Connexion: “When we started this four years ago, there were only three of us. Sign language at concerts isn’t common in France, but it’s becoming more so.

“In the US, if someone that’s hearing-impaired asks for it beforehand, concert organisers have been required to provide them with an interpreter since the 90s. In France, sometimes you don’t even have sign interpreters when politicians are speaking.”

She said the sign interpreters “really adapt LSF (French Sign Language) to convey the feel and meaning of the music”.

She added the group is always looking for more interpreters because it is getting more work than it can handle.

She said: “Last month, we were doing four concerts at the same time.”

France’s economy grew better than expected

The French economy grew more than expected in the second quarter of the year, at 0.5%. This was largely due to good export levels – particularly for transport materials – as the purchasing power of households remains low, said national statistics bureau Insee.

The growth outstripped predictions of a 0.1% growth for the period between April and June. Speaking to RTL, Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire said that the growth was “a remarkable performance that shows the success of the economic policy that we have embarked on since 2017”.

Boy, 12, rescued after four hours stuck in a well

A 12-year-old boy has been saved after getting stuck in a well for four hours in Savoie on Wednesday (July 26). The boy became stuck in the 12-metre hole after lowering himself into the well with a rope.

However, he was then injured and buried by falling rocks and rubble. The well was on land belonging to the boy’s parents.

It took 40 firefighters, gendarmerie, Samu, and mountain rescue personnel to get him out of the well in Coise-Saint-Jean-Pied-Gauthier, around 30 km from Chambéry.

Deputy head of the mountain rescue team, Michel Pugin, told FranceBleu: “We dug and dug until he could see our lights through a little hole. But the walls were collapsing slowly, which made it difficult. Luckily we were able to speak to him, and he had been talking to his parents through a radio.

“We also put a bit of music on to calm the atmosphere down.”

The boy was saved at around 20:00 after four hours and was taken to hospital with mild hypothermia.

Food waste limited by fruit and veg food initiative

A food bank in northwest France has created a new ‘legumerie’ to avoid waste and improve local people’s diets. It takes damaged and unsold fruit and vegetables that are still suitable to eat, and turns them into ready-to-cook packages.

The Banque Alimentaire Sarthe distributes more than 900 tonnes of goods every year, working in partnership with 109 organisations, to benefit more than 15,500 people in 2022.

In April this year, it decided to act on fruit and vegetable waste and create vacuum bags of peeled, washed, and pre-chopped vegetables for people to take home. This keeps the veg fresher for longer, avoids it from being thrown away, and makes it easier and quicker for people to cook.

Lucie Rioul, general manager of the food bank, told Actu Le Mans: “We saw that we had waste and we wanted to see what we could do about it. The association works against waste by picking up goods, but we wanted to go further.

“On average, we prepare 350 kilos per week, depending on how much we get. It also helps people eat well, and fits in well with our mission to help improve our users’ nutritional balance.”

Four lions and a tiger rescued from a circus

An animal rescue association has rescued five big cats from a circus due to “several irregularities”.

The Tonga Terre d’Accueil rescue centre said the operation needed around 50 gendarmerie and animal welfare inspectors after specialist vets from the ZooParc de Beauval had previously sedated the animals and put them into specially-designed transportation crates.

The animals arrived at the centre in St-Martin-la-Plaine, and all are doing well, the rescue centre said.

The four lionesses – aged around 13 – had had their claws removed, but otherwise “seem in good health”, the centre said, although still need to “put on a bit of muscle”.

However, the tiger – also a female, aged 11 – is suffering from a skin condition, the cause of which is not yet known. It could be due to “poor food, illness, or linked to her lifestyle conditions”, the centre said. They are now waiting for test results before hopefully proceeding to treatment.

It comes as circuses in France are transitioning away from using wild animals in their acts after the government has introduced rules that will gradually ban them completely.

Read more: Wild animals to be banned from shows in France – where will they go?

Tonga Terre d’Accueil said that they suspected a lack of animal traceability at the circus, and said there was no ‘resting’ area nor access to outside space for the animals, despite this being obligatory.

The centre said: “Fortunately [seizures like this] remain the exception. We want to reassure circuses of our support in their transition to the end of wild animal shows and will work with them to find solutions for the placement of their animals.

“It is much calmer to proceed with voluntary surrenders before reaching the stage of legal proceedings as is the case today. Thanks to the support of the authorities and the government, our refuge is planning to build new accommodation for circus lions and tigers.

“We can assure owners that their animals will be pampered by our team, and will enjoy a happy retirement. In a few days’ time, they will discover their outdoor space and will be able to feel the grass under their paws for the first time.”

The association welcomes any kind of donations, as caring for the animals costs €100 per week per animal, it said. After the animals are ‘back on their paws’, they will be transported to a suitable zoo.

North-Atlantic-Telegraph-Cable-pub-domain-e1690358053772.jpg

Good News in History, July 27

[ad_1]

157 years ago, the Transatlantic Telegraph Cable was pulled ashore at Heart’s Content, Newfoundland, having been towed 1,600 miles by Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s steamship. The cable altered for all time personal, commercial, and political relations between people across the Atlantic. Since 1866 there has been a permanent cable connection between the continents. READ more about how our ancestors managed it… (1866)

North Atlantic Telegraph Cable – pub domain

The first cable across the Atlantic, laid by The Atlantic Telegraph Company led by Cyrus West Field functioned for only 3 weeks before having to be abandoned after an operator overloaded the voltage. A second one was made with much improved materials, but it broke halfway across the Atlantic.

Field was ignorant of submarine telegraph cables when he took up the project and consulted with the world’s leading expert at the time, John Watkins Brett who had organized the laying of telegraph cables across both the English and Irish channels.

The first cable Field commissioned for the project consisted of 7 copper wires, each weighing 26 kg/km, covered with three coats of gutta-percha, weighing 64 kg/km, and wound with tarred hemp, over which a sheath of 18 strands, each of 7 iron wires, was laid in a close helix. It weighed nearly 550 kg/km, was relatively flexible, and could withstand tension of several tens of kilonewtons.

Field had to cross the Atlantic Ocean 56 times in the course of planning the operation. The steamship which took the third and final cable across the ocean was Isambard Brunel’s SS Great Eastern, nothing less than the largest ship ever built at the time of its maiden voyage, powered by twin paddle steamers and sails.

2 years ago today, the largest repatriation of artifacts in American history, 17,000 in all, was sent from the U.S. State Department back to Baghdad. It was a collection of confiscated contraband, as looters continually depleted the country’s heritage over the 20-year American occupation. Iraq of course is the site of many of the civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia, much of the collection is 3,500 – 4,000 years old.

Chief among the artifacts is a section of the famous poem the Epic of Gilgamesh, known as the Gilgamesh Dream Tablet. This was smuggled into the U.S. by an antiquities dealer and sold at Christie’s auction house for $1.4 million to the U.S. craft chain Hobby Lobby, who later supported the order by a federal court of New York to return to priceless cuneiform tablet to Iraq. On this day 102 years ago, a Canadian surgeon and a medical student successfully isolated the hormone insulin for the first time.

A University of Toronto orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Frederick Banting, recruited the chemistry skills of an assistant, Charles Best, to help with isolating the insulin, which then produced normal blood glucose levels when injected.

Before the breakthrough, people with type 1 diabetes rarely lived more than a year or two. One of the 20th century’s greatest medical discoveries, it still remains the only effective treatment for type 1 diabetes.

By 1923, insulin had become widely available in mass production, and Banting was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine. Charles Best, being a graduate student, was not included, but Banting recognized him by sharing the award money.

Banting and his colleague John Macleod, who shared the Noble honor, were reluctant to patent their insulin process on grounds of medical ethics. But they did secure a patent, only to prevent any pharmaceutical company from gaining a monopoly, and they published their research so anyone could use it. (1921)

And, on this day in 1992, Nelson Mandela announced a general strike to demand free elections and the removal of South African President F. W. de Klerk, with whom he would later share a Nobel Peace Prize.

The successful strike was called two years after he was freed from decades in prison and became the president of his recently legalized political party, the African National Congress. Many books and movies have been produced about the reconciliation between these two men.

83 years ago today, Bugs Bunny, the wisecracking Warner Bros cartoon character, first debuted in an animated short entitled A Wild Hare.

Supervised by Fred ‘Tex’ Avery, it featured a hunter named Elmer Fudd pursuing a wily rabbit voiced by Mel Blanc. The pair became beloved, and their debut received an Oscar nomination for Best animated short.

The cartoon opens with Elmer tiptoeing as he tells the audience, “Shh. Be vewy, vewy quiet; I’m hunting wabbits.” Elmer then tries to lure Bugs out of his hole with a carrot, while hiding behind a tree. Bugs’ arm reaches out of the hole, feels around, and snatches the carrot, but soon sees Elmer’s double-barreled shotgun. It quickly gets bent into a bow before Bugs shows up later, saying while eating another carrot, “What’s up, Doc?”, which reportedly brought down the house in every movie theater—and became his signature line.

Fox Forces Jason Aldean to Edit ‘Try That In a

[ad_1]

Producers of Jason Aldean’s “Try That in a Small Town” music video have quietly removed archival footage of Black Lives Matter rioters after Fox threatened legal action, according to a new report.

The footage in question is a brief series of clips from Fox 5 Atlanta showing BLM rioters violently protesting in the streets, TMZ reported. Sources told TMZ the company that produced the video reached out to Fox back in May and asked for permission to use the six seconds of news footage.

Fox reportedly asked for more information, specifically the lyrics of the song. But the production company sent Fox a link to the song rather than the lyrics in writing.

A week ago, Fox reached out to the production company and asked them to edit out the footage to avoid any legal action and the production company complied, TMZ reported. Sources described the request as a “polite ultimatum.”

The re-edited “Try That in a Small Town” music video replaces the BLM riot footage — projected on the front of a courthouse building — with shots of Aldean performing the song.

However, the old version of the video can still be found on social media.

As Breitbart News reported,“Try That in a Small Town” has enraged leftists and corporate journalists who have attempted to censor the song for its depiction of the violent and deadly Black Lives Matter riots of 2020 as well as the overall spike in crime in major cities.

CMT, which is owned by Paramount, pulled the music video following pressure from leftist activists. Like other Hollywood studios, Paramount supported the BLM rioters who laid waste to cities around the country.

Aldean has refused to take a knee to the mob, recently performing the hit single to an appreciative crowd who chanted “USA!” in response.

Three men arrested for horrific assault on Alabama

[ad_1]

Three adult men have been arrested for the brutal assault of a teenager at a country music festival in Alabama.

Cullman police announced on Wednesday that William Joseph Vinson Jr., 20; Zachary Scott Taylor, 21; and Chance Marcus Alan Starling, 20, were arrested Tuesday night following the assault of 18-year-old Reid Watts at the Rock the South music festival over the weekend.

Video from the event showed a group of men throwing the teenager to the ground and repeatedly punching him — allegedly because Watts spilled a drink on one of them.

Watts was left with a broken and had to be rushed to a local hospital in the aftermath.

The three men are now facing second-degree assault charges, which comes with a maximum sentence of 10 years behind bars.

At a news conference on Wednesday, Cullman Police Chief David Nassetta said officers were able to apprehend the suspects thanks to tips from the public.

‘The victim did not know them, and the witnesses we had didn’t know them, so it was really an important part of the puzzle for people to look at the video and say, “Yeah I know these guys,”‘ the police chief said.

When asked about a possible motive for the brutal bating, Nassetta declined to go into details, but said it was ‘absolutely meaningless.

‘Our investigation showed that it was a pretty frivolous, meaningless thing,’ he said.

‘Nothing can really justify something like that, but in this particular incident, it was something that normally should not rise to this level of violence,’ Nassetta continued.

‘I think it kind of speaks a little bit to the character of the individuals that we arrested.’

Rock the South co-owner and producer Nathan Ball also thanked police, festival goers and social media users who helped identify the suspects.

‘Like you, we were absolutely disgusted and appalled at the cowardly actions of a few individuals at our festival last weekend,’ he said at the news conference.

‘I want to emphasize wholeheartedly that this behavior is neither widespread nor common at any of our events.’

Following the news, Watts’ mother, Kaci Howard, took to Facebook to call her son’s alleged attackers ‘cowards.’

‘Imagine being as big as these three cowards and attacking a kid who weighs 124lbs from behind, attacking anyone from behind for that matter,’ she wrote, sharing the suspects’ mugshots.

Vinson, Starling and Taylor’s cases will be presented to a Cullman County grand jury at a later date.

The suspects are currently out on bond.

Watts has previously said the entire altercation began Saturday night when a man at the music festival accused him of spilling a drink on him.

The teenager said he attempted to clear up any confusion, since he did not have a drink on him. The pair reportedly shook hands, but just moments later as his friends left to use the restroom, the teen was attacked from behind.

He told his local ABC station: ‘Some dude said I was spilling beer on him or something along those things, and then I talked to him because I didn’t have a drink on me at the time, like I didn’t have anything, I talked to him and shook his hand because I thought everything was okay because I explained to him it wasn’t me.’

‘Then a few minutes later, I was walking back and got hit in the back of the head, then I hit the ground and tried to cover my face then I got knocked out and that was really all I remember,’ he added.

The young man’s girlfriend, Katie Hudgins, called the incident traumatizing.

‘It was horrible, I’m traumatized, I felt so helpless because I couldn’t get in there and get to him and I had to sit there and watch him get beat up while he’s unconscious, it’s horrible,’ she said.

The brawl didn’t end until festival security got involved, found the teen and rushed him out of the venue.

Howard also said: ‘They continued beating him while he was on the ground until security finally got to them and got Reid and Katie out of there and to an ambulance.’

She shared a picture of her son being supported by a neck brace after he was rushed to the hospital, with an extremely swollen and red face,

‘He has a fractured nose, concussion, stitches, knots the size of softballs on the back of his head. He never even saw it coming,’ she wrote on Facebook

The teen has since been released from the hospital and is now recovering from his injuries at home.

He said that he’s doing alright and the whole thing ‘could’ve been a lot worse.’

Jason Aldean’s Controversial “Try That In A Small

[ad_1]

Jason Aldean stood by the footage used in his controversial video for “Try That in a Small Town.” However, the video has since been edited to remove clips from Black Lives Matter protests in Atlanta.

The country singer in the middle of backlash over the lyrics of his song and imagery in his video is accused of being pro-violence and pro-lynching.

“Try That in a Small Town” shows the singer performing his song in front of a courthouse where a Black teen was lynched in the 1920s. Images of protests against police violence are projected over the building as Aldean sings things like, “got a gun that my granddad gave me, they say one day they’re gonna round up, well, that shit might fly in the city, good luck.”

The music video that was removed by CMT has now been cut and footage from Fox 5’s Atlanta has been taken out, according to The Washington Post. “Try That in a Small Town” is now six seconds shorter with Aldean’s record label BBR Music Group saying in a statement, “The video footage was edited due to third-party copyright clearance issues.”

Aldean denied his video had anything to do with the BLM protests saying in a statement, “These references are not only meritless, but dangerous. There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it- and there isn’t a single video clip that isn’t real news footage -and while I can try and respect others to have their own interpretation of a song with music- this one goes too far.”

During a recent concert in Cincinnati, Aldean blasted “cancel culture” for the backlash he was receiving.

“You guys know how it is, in this day and age, cancel culture is a thing. That’s something that if people don’t like what you say they try to make sure they can cancel you, which means try to ruin your life, ruin everything,” he said. “One thing I saw this week was a bunch of country music fans that can see through a lot of the bullshit. I saw country music fans rally like I’ve never seen before and it was pretty badass, I gotta say. Thank you guys so much.”

Mood Music for a Happy (We Hope) UFO Day

[ad_1]

BoblordOn Wed. July 26 at 10 a.m., the first U.S. Congressional hearings on UAP (or UFOs if you’re old-school) will take place with three “whistleblowers” answering questions, under oath, about the out-of-this-world weirdness that apparently has been going on since Roswell in 1947 (or is it since 1933 when Benito Mussolini got his hands on a crashed flying saucer?).

If any of this is news to you, you’ve got some catching up to do and it could be a jarring experience, depending on how convincing the witnesses are. Also, since Congressional hearings tend to be rich in informational content but lacking in aesthetic charm, you might just want to provide a little background music to the proceedings so there’s a bit of melody and rhythm behind the probing and argumentation.

Fortunately, here in the state that brought us The Incident at Exeter and the Interrupted Journey of Betty and Barney Hill (soon to be a major motion picture produced by Barack and Michelle Obama), we have a corner on the intergalactic muse in the form of Bob Lord, musical composer, bassist and executive producer of two Grammy Award-winning albums.

Among Lord’s many interests as a world-traveling producer is the UFO topic and, released today, is one of his favorite and most personal side-projects, a digital record album titled “The Six Observables.”

“I live in New Hampshire,” says Lord, “home to some of the weirdest sh*t around. We’ve got skee ball, we’ve got fry doe, we’ve got UFOs and we’ve definitely got plenty of non-human intelligence. But it has become increasingly clear to me that there’s an even greater and higher strangeness out there.”

In fact, Lord is friends with one of the three people testifying today, pilot Ryan Graves, while the other fighter pilot testifying about the potential threats to our airspace posed by UAP is Commander David Fravor, who also has a home on the New Hampshire seacoast.

So the Granite State has plenty of skin in the game (though no “skinwalkers” as far as we know) but be sure to have snacks and something to remain hydrated as the veil is lifted – maybe just an inch or two — and the new world we share with “non-human intelligence” begins to be exposed. And for ideal musical accompaniment, download Bob Lord’s carefully crafted soundtrack for the experience (after paying what you think is fair) from Bandcamp at the following link: https://boblordmusic.bandcamp.com/album/the-six-observables

And be sure to read his liner notes on the Bandcamp page. They are an excellent intro to the revelations that may be about to be revealed.

Kiara Advani Serves Desi Barbie Vibes in Pink

[ad_1]

Actor Kiara Advani made a bold appearance in a Barbie-inspired outfit from designer duo Falguni and Shane Peacock on the first day of the India Couture Week (ICW). The designers on Tuesday (July 25) unveiled their collection Renaissance Reverie, featuring bridal wear for men and women, inspired by their love for art and the treasures they encounter during their travels, as per the collection note. India Couture Week 2023: Aditi Rao Hydari to Be the Muse for Ritu Kumar’s Fashion Show.

Advani, who is no stranger to the ICW ramp, looked every bit resplendent as she walked the stage in a bold pink ensemble outfit with bead and sequin work. The dress featured a top with plunging neckline and a skirt with a high slit and long train at the back, which many dubbed an outfit perfect for desi Barbie, a reference to Robbie’s new Hollywood movie Barbie, currently running in theatres worldwide. Kiara Advani Channels Her Inner Desi Barbie as She Walks Ramp for Falguni Shane Peacock at ICW 2023 (View Pics).

Kiara Advani Looks Hot:

“As a showstopper, it was the perfect outfit. It was such a versatile outfit. We styled it in a western way and that’s the beauty of all the creations. They are all versatile and you can wear them as per your taste,” the Satyaprem Ki Katha star told reporters after the event. Turning showstopper for Falguni and Shane Peacock was a no-brainer, Advani said.

“I feel absolutely stunning in this outfit and I always feel that whenever I am dressed by them. Two days ago, my manager asked if I wanted to see the clothes and I said, ‘It’s Falguni and Shane, they will give me something stunning.’ They always supersede my expectations,” the actor said. She praised the designer duo for blending “detail with a lot of glamour” in their creations.

“Every piece just stands out. Every single outfit looked like a showstopper outfit today. And that is something I believe is their USP. They really bring that magic,” she added. Advani, who previously walked the ICW ramp for Amit Aggarwal in 2019, said she was glad to be back on the stage.  “I hadn’t been on the stage for a while due to the pandemic and my work commitments. So to come back to the ramp, and of course for Falguni and Shane, is a match made in heaven. I just hope that we’ve set the tone right for the others.

“It’s the magic of doing a show in front of a live audience with the lights and music, it all just comes together. There was a romantic energy in the atmosphere. I could just feel it,” she added. Advani, wife of her Shershaah co-star Sidharth Malhotra, said the evening was made special by the presence of her husband’s family.

“My in-laws are here. I’m in the national capital where my husband’s family lives. So I had them come and see me walk the ramp, which is a first. It was nice to see everyone cheering me on in this beautiful outfit,’ she said.

With Advani as their muse, Falguni and Shane said it was a great start to the 16th edition of the fashion gala.

Asked about Advani’s Barbie-inspired outfit, Falguni told PTI, “Today’s Barbie is just so intelligent. It’s not just beauty but it’s brain and having a mind of your own. We really wanted to channel the inner Barbie in her and make everyone see how stunning she is.” The fashion gala, organised by Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) and presented by Hyundai Motor India, will run till August 2.

American Idol fans ‘furious’ as judge Katy Perry’s

Now, American Idol has announced that Katy will rejoin fellow judges Luke Bryan, 47, and Lionel Richie, 74, for the seventh season of the singing competition on ABC.

Viewers had previously called for the reality competition series to fire the judge as they “can’t stand her” anymore.

Katy received much fan backlash throughout the most recent season of American Idol for her comments to contestants, her wardrobe, and her behavior.

Fan reactions continued to be the same after the announcement was made with many viewers rushing to Twitter to share their opinions on the singer’s return to the show.

One person tweeted: “No one’s excited,” while another added: “literally crickets.”

A second Idol fan asked: “This is what we deserve?” as a third emphatically replied: “NOOOOO.”

A fourth person simply stated: “We lost.”

While another writer remarked: “You can’t find a single Katy Perry fan on this planet that wanted her to return.”

Katy’s fans have been annoyed by many of the singer’s recent career moves.

On Sunday, the TV personality took to Instagram to promote Michael J. Woodward’s latest single, Face.

Many fans ignored the promotion and begged the Teenage Dream singer to release music of her own.

They said the same thing when Katy promoted another artist’s song last week.

The star has yet to respond to fans’ concerns.

Katy’s most recent album, Smile, was released in 2020.

Since then, career-wise, the pop singer has been focusing on her shoe collection and De Soi, a non-alcoholic sparkling drink company she co-founded.

In her personal life, she gave birth to her daughter, Daisy, with Hollywood actor, Orlando Bloom, 46.

NEW MUSIC NEEDED

Fans pleaded with the singer to release new tunes.

“Stop sharing people’s songs start sharing your news,” one fan commented.

“WHERE THE F*** ARE THE LEAD SINGLE OF KP6???? PLEASE,” another said, using a crying emoji.

One demanded: “GIVE US NEW MUSIC.”

“We want new song from YOU,” a third agreed.

A fourth said: “This is so annoying omg.”

“We want you back!!! You’re Katy Perry,” stated a fifth.

Another fan commented: “Girl, this insta is for u and YOUR music not for other people.”

“What you are doing with your career is unbelievable,” a seventh argued.

STICKING TOGETHER

Last month, Luke Bryan defended his co-star Katy and claimed she gets picked on after she was continually slammed by many viewers.

Luke jumped to her defense when asked if he thinks American Idol fans have been too harsh in their criticism of her.

“Katy Perry’s been dealing with stuff like that her whole career,” Luke said during an interview at the Country Music Association Fest.

“We all get it…. I mean we’re judging kids that people at home fall in love with…. We’re not gonna bat 1,000 as judges.”

He continued: “I think we get set up. As judges, you know, we kinda fall on the sword a lot of times. And get set up to where people can get very vocal on socials and stuff.

“Katy gets picked on for going out and trying to have fun making a TV show,” Luke added.

“You can’t be so safe in the moment that you’re so homogenized, you can’t ever go for a joke. Or go for a fun moment. Sometimes, you just gotta say stuff. It may be my year, next year.”

Luke claimed that entertainers are “conditioned” and “calloused” to backlash.

He then said of his co-star: “It makes me appreciate her even more, just how big of a scale she’s had to deal with that her whole career.”

Throughout season 21 of American Idol, Katy was accused of “mom-shaming” and being “condescending” toward various contestants.

Back in April, many viewers felt she acted “rudely” toward singer Wé Ani in particular.

The singer was slammed for looking shocked when Wé was picked as the last person to go through to the top 12 and for failing to give her any feedback after her performance.
