Training starts in September for Fox Valley Crisis

Applications are being taken through Sept. 8 or until all slots are filled for taking a 10-week training program to become a Fox Valley Crisis Line volunteer.

Training focuses on how to interact with people who are experiencing a crisis that involves mental illness, suicide, domestic violence, sexual assault or alcohol/drug use and provide them with community resources that can help, a news release said.

Classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Sept. 21, at the Association for Individual Development Aurora Behavioral Health Services, 1230 N. Highland Ave., Aurora.

Tickets are on sale for the Rotary Club of Carpentersville’s Blind Flights fundraiser, a picnic-style craft beer tasting and judging event being held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 15, in Carpenter Park, 275 Maple Ave., Carpentersville.

Beers from 10 craft breweries and one home brewer will be available, according to the club’s website. Attendees will taste each beer and vote on their favorite without knowing in advance who made it.

A bike valued at $600 has been donated by Main Street Bicycles and will be raffled off at the event.

Live music will be provided by The Porch Flies and food will be sold by Duke’s BBQ and La Alcancia Taqueria.

Tickets are $30 for those who will be drinking and $10 for those who won’t, the site said. Tickets can be purchased at www.eventbrite.com.

The South Elgin Parks and Recreation Department and several community organizations will celebrate Unplug Illinois Day with a free family adventure gathering from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5, in Panton Mill Park, 9 N. Water St.

Activities will include lawn games and crafts meant to encourage people to spend time outdoors and away from electronic devices, according to the village’s website.

Volunteers are being sought to help at the Kane County Recycling Extravaganza, scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 22, at the Kane County Government Building, 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

Clair Ryan, head of the Kane County recycling program, needs people to help guide drop-offs, hand out postcards, and lift and move objects of varying weights.

Volunteers report in at 7:15 a.m. and work until noon, with lunch served afterward.
