Pete Murray reveals how the tragic death of his father when he was just 18 inspired him to pursue a career in music

Pete Murray has revealed that losing his father at a young age motivated him to start his music career.

The Australian singer who was just 18 years old when his father died at 47, said the tragic loss made him look for a career which allowed him to spend time with family.

‘What I wanted out of life was time because my dad died. He and mum bought a caravan and they were about to travel around Australia,’ the 53-year-old told News Corp on Saturday.

‘But dad died one month before that happened. I didn’t want that to happen to me. I wanted to be able to have time to spend with my family and friends,’ he continued. 

Pete’s extraordinary success in the music industry has seen him sell over 1.2million albums within Australia and allowed him to live the life he always dreamed of.

‘I wanna keep going. That’s what I love doing, and playing live is so much fun. I love it. I wanna be doing it till the day I die, and I think that’s a long way off,’ he mused. 

Earlier this month Murray revealed he thought his 2003 breakout album Feeler was going to flop.

The So Beautiful hitmaker made the shock admission during an interview on the Jess Rowe Big Talk Show.

Released to widespread acclaim, Feeler was Pete’s second album and ultimately sold over 500,000 copies, reaching No. 1 on Australia’s ARIA chart.

But Pete admitted to host Rowe that at the time he thought it was ‘destined to fail.’ 

‘Sometimes you get into a post-album blues after an album gets released and you just can’t think anything good about it… I thought that I failed,’ he confessed.

However, once radio stations heard the record it started to take off and became a blockbuster hit in the Australian music industry.

Murray is a father of four to sons Pedro and Charlie from his first marriage and shares daughters Saachi and Sahara with his second wife Mira.

Pete Murray’s Best Of album is out now, and his national greatest hits tour kicks off on July 8.
