Behind the music – Setting Suns DC

Setting Suns DC, the husband-and-wife duo of Karl and Gayle Moore, have released their six-track debut EP, 42. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

Speaking about the new release, they say, “All tracks were written towards the end of lockdown in Ireland and are a reflection on growing older and the changes that happen in our lives overtime.

“While the subject matter can seem quite morbid at times, we ultimately wanted to create something positive. Passing Satellites is perhaps the most upbeat of the tracks but is actually the most morbid. Written for friends that have passed in the last few years.”

Tell us three things about yourself?

We wrote the entire E.P while expecting our second child. Karl may have an addiction to buying guitars. Gayle has an addiction to buying birthday stationary.

How would you describe your music?

Heartfelt. We had one goal in mind which was to try and tell a story and write songs that we would like to listen to. What came out we feel is a mash of rock/pop with a little bit of Americana.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Such a long list. To name a few (The Cure, Jason Isbell, Deftones, Depeche Mode, Foals, M83, Bruce Springsteen). As you can see it’s a complete mashup.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Karl – R.E.M. at Slane in 1995. Belly stole the show that day for me.

Gayle -Oasis, 1996 at The Point.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Karl -It was a Nirvana bootleg cassette from an old shop in Temple Bar. I can’t remember the name (probably Borderline – Ed).

Gayle – Madonna True Blue at Golden Discs, Bray.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Sam Fender – Angel of Lothian. He has a real gift for lyrics

Favourite lyric of all time?

“They declared me unfit to live, Said into that great void my soul be hurled, They wanted to know why I did what I did, Sir, I guess there’s just a meanness in this world”. Nebraska – Bruce Springsteen.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Karl – Probably the one whose lyrics are above. Nebraska – Bruce Springsteen.
